This is where establishing the habit of praying comes into. It provides the structure and accountability needed to make sure we are connected to God on a regularly.
How do you begin? First, you must decide which time of the day is the most suitable time to pray. Some prefer to begin their day with prayer, and others prefer to pray before going to going to bed. Try it out and discover which method works best for you.
Once you’ve identified the ideal time for prayer, you can start to build your routine. Here’s an example of a daily pattern for morning prayer:
Begin by addressing God, ask for his blessing as you read and pray.
Go through a section of the Bible and reflect on it for a while. It can be done by reading the passage three to four times, or listing anything it tells you about yourself, the examples you can follow, instructions to follow or promises to claim.
Structure your prayer by praying for adoration, confession, petition, and thanksgiving. Prayerfully address your immediate needs and worries and then take time to enjoy God’s presence.
The best thing about a prayer routine is that it can be adapted to suit your needs. Some people may only have some minutes while others might have an hours or longer. The trick is that you make this a constant part of your routine. If you fall off a day or two do not fret! Just get back on track the next day.
An everyday prayer practice is a wonderful opportunity to begin your new year off with a new sense of purpose and spiritual connection with God. It’s a powerful way to begin your day by putting your focus upon the Lord and aligning your thoughts and actions with His will.
Another way to enhance your prayer routine is to make it more interactive. Instead of just reciting words, try to engage with God at a deeper level. Try using your imagination to imagine the scenes that are described within the Bible. You can try to imagine the feelings of these characters and place yourself in their the shoes of their characters. This makes your time of prayer more meaningful and personal.
Try incorporating different forms in your prayer day-to-day routine. For example, try a silent prayer, contemplative prayer, or even writing down your prayers. This will keep your prayer practice from becoming repetitive and provide the variety you need to your spiritual practice.
One of the most effective methods to keep yourself focused and in line with your daily prayer routine is sharing it with other people. Find an accountability partner either a close friend or family member who can check on you regularly and help you to stick to your routine. They can even join you in prayer and share their personal experiences.
The goal of daily prayer is to increase your connection with God and ensure that your actions and thoughts are in line to His plan. It’s not about perfectionism or following an unwritten set of guidelines, but rather being deliberate and consistent in your daily spiritual practice. Take the time to discover a prayer practice that is a good fit for you and set it as a priority within your everyday life. You’ll be amazed at the impact it has on your spiritual growth as well as overall wellbeing.
