Let’s be real, life can be hectic and it’s easy to let prayers slide off the list of priorities. Like everything else that’s worth having, it takes commitment and discipline. This is where establishing an effective prayer schedule comes in. It provides an order and accountability to ensure that we’re connected to God on a an ongoing basis.
How do you begin? It’s the first thing to do is determine which time of the day is the most suitable time to pray. Some prefer to begin their day by praying, and others prefer to pray in the evening before going to getting to bed. Experiment and see which method works best for you.
Once you’ve determined the best time for prayer then you can begin to establish a routine. Here’s an illustration of a typical daily routine for morning prayer:
Begin by talking to God, ask for his blessing as you read and pray.
Take a chapter from the Bible and reflect on it. It can be done by reading it three to four times, or writing down everything it reveals about yourself, or guidelines to obey or promises to make.
Structure your prayer by making confession, adoration prayer, thanksgiving, and petition. Make a prayer for your urgent needs and concerns as well as taking time to enjoy God’s presence.
The great thing about a prayer routine is that it can be adapted to fit your needs. For some, you may have only a few minutes to spare and others could have an hour or more. The trick is that you make this a regular element of your day-to-day routine. If you don’t make it through a day or two Don’t be concerned! Get back on track the next day.
An everyday prayer practice is an excellent opportunity to begin your new year off with a fresh sense of purpose and spiritual connection with God. It’s an effective way to begin your day by keeping your eyes to the Lord and aligning your thoughts and actions with His will.
Another way to increase your prayer time is to enhance it by making it more engaging. Instead of just reciting words, try to engage with God at a deeper level. Use your imagination and try to imagine the scenes that are described by the Bible. Try to feel the emotions of the characters and put yourself in their the shoes of their characters. This can make your time in prayer more meaningful and personal.
It is also possible to incorporate various forms prayers into your routine. For example, try a silent prayers, contemplative prayers, or even journaling your prayers. This will keep your prayer practice from becoming repetitive and provide variety to your spiritual routine.
One of the most effective ways to stay focused and in line with your daily prayers is sharing the practice with other people. Find an accountability partner, a family member or friend member who will check on you regularly and help you to keep to your schedule. They can even be a part of your prayer and share their personal experiences.
Remember, the goal of a regular prayer routine is to strengthen your relationship with God and align your thoughts and actions to His plan. It’s not about perfection or following an unwritten set of rules, it’s about being consistent and deliberate in your daily spiritual practice. So, take the time to find a prayer routine that is a good fit for you and make it a priority in your day-to-day life.
