Life can be busy and it’s easy to let prayers get lost on the priority list. Like everything else that’s worth having, it takes effort and discipline. That’s where developing an effective prayer schedule comes in. It provides the structure and accountability needed to ensure we’re connected to God on a an ongoing basis.
So, how do you begin? The first step is to figure out which time of the day is most conducive to you to pray. Some people prefer to start their day by praying, and others prefer to pray at night before bed. Experiment and see what works best for you.
After you’ve decided on the most appropriate time to pray then you can begin to build your routine. Here’s an illustration of a typical daily routine for morning prayers:
Begin by talking to God to ask for his blessing as you read and meditate.
Take a chapter from the Bible and then meditate on it for a while. This can be accomplished by reading it three or four times or by listing the things it says about yourself or guidelines to follow or promises to claim.
Make your prayer a ritual by praying for adoration, confession as well as petition and thanksgiving. Make a prayer for your immediate needs and worries as well as taking time to sit in the presence of God.
The great thing about a prayer routine is that it’s customizable to fit your needs. For some, you may have only just a few minutes while others might be able to devote a whole hour or more. The trick is to make it a constant element of your day-to-day routine. And if you miss the occasional day or two do not fret! Get back on track the following day.
A daily prayer practice is a great way to start the new year with a new sense of purpose and connection with the divine. It’s a powerful method to begin your day by placing your attention to the Lord and making sure that your actions and thoughts are aligned in accordance with His plan.
Another method to improve your prayer practice is to enhance it by making it more interactive. Instead of simply reciting words, you should try to connect with God at a deeper level. Use your imagination and try to picture the scenes described within the Bible. Try to feel the emotions of the characters, and put yourself in their shoes. This will make your prayer time more meaningful and personal.
It is also possible to incorporate different types prayers into your daily routine. For example, try a silent prayers, contemplative prayers, or even writing down your prayers. This will prevent your prayer practice from becoming repetitive and provide variety to your spiritual routine.
One of the most effective ways to remain engaged and focused on your daily prayer routine is sharing the practice with others. Find a partner in accountability, a friend or family member who can check on you regularly and help you to adhere to your routine. They can even join you in prayers and share their own experiences.
Remember, the goal of a daily prayer practice is to increase your connection with God and ensure that your actions and thoughts are in line with His will. It’s not about perfection or following an unwritten set of guidelines, but rather being intentional and consistent in your daily spiritual practice. Therefore, make the effort to discover a prayer practice that you enjoy and make it a priority in your day-to-day life.
