The most challenging aspect of prayer is making it a consistent part of our lives. With a amount of planning and effort it is possible to create an effective prayer schedule that works with your lifestyle and schedule. The most appealing part is that you are able to modify it to match your own personality and religious tradition.
Let’s be real, life is hectic and it’s easy to let prayer get lost on the list of priorities. However, just like everything else that’s worth having, it takes commitment and discipline. This is where establishing the habit of praying comes into. It provides the structure and accountability needed to ensure that we’re connected to God on a a regular basis.
So, how do you start? First, you must decide the time of day that is the most suitable time to pray. Some prefer to begin their day by praying, while others prefer to pray before going to going to bed. Test and see what works best for you.
Once you’ve determined the best time to pray then you can begin building your daily routine. Here’s an example of a daily pattern for morning prayers:
Begin by approaching God to ask for his help as you read and meditate.
Go through a section of the Bible and reflect on the passage. This can be accomplished by reading it three or four times, or listing anything it tells you about yourself or the examples you can follow, instructions to obey or promises to make.
Structure your prayer by offering adoration, confession, petition, and thanksgiving. Prayerfully address your needs and pressing concerns as well as taking time to sit in the presence of God.
The best thing about a prayer routine is that it can be adapted to suit your needs. For some, you may have only a few minutes to spare, while others may have a half an hour or more. It’s important that you make this a consistent part of your routine. If you fall off one or two days do not fret! Get back on track the following day.
The practice of daily prayer is a great opportunity to begin this new year feeling a renewed sense of purpose and feeling of connection to the divine. It’s a powerful method to start your day, keeping your eyes on the Lord and aligning your thoughts and actions with His will.
Another way to increase your prayer practice is to enhance it by making it more interactive. Instead of reciting the words, you should try to connect with God on a deeper level. Try using your imagination to picture the scenes described in the Bible. Make an effort to experience the emotion of each character and put yourself in their the shoes of their characters. This will make your prayer time more personal and meaningful.
You can also try incorporating various forms prayers into your daily routine. For example, try silent prayer, contemplative prayer, or even writing down your prayers. This will keep your prayer practice from becoming repetitive and provide the variety you need to your spiritual practice.
One of the best ways to remain engaged and focused on your daily prayers is sharing the practice with others. Find an accountability partner either a close friend or family member who can check in with you and encourage you to adhere to your schedule. They could even join you in prayer and share their own experiences.
The goal of a daily prayer practice is to deepen your relationship with God and make sure that your thoughts and actions are aligned with His will. It’s not about perfection or adhering to a strict set of rules, it’s about being deliberate and consistent in your life of faith. Therefore, make the effort to discover a prayer practice that is a good fit for you and make it a priority in your day-to-day life.
