The most challenging part of prayer is making it a constant part of our lives. But with a little bit of planning and effort you can develop a prayer routine that works for you and your time. It’s true that life can be busy and it’s easy to let prayer get lost on the priority list. However, just like everything else worth being a part of, it requires commitment and discipline. This is where establishing the habit of praying comes into. It gives an order and accountability to ensure we’re connected to God on a a regular basis.
How do you begin? First, you must figure out the time of day that works best for you to pray. Some people like to start their day with prayer while others find it easier to pray at night before bed. Try it out and discover which method works best for you.
Once you’ve identified the ideal time to pray then you can begin building your daily routine. Here’s an example of a daily pattern for morning prayer:
Begin by talking to God to ask for his blessing while you read and pray.
Read a passage from the Bible and reflect on it for a while. It can be done by reading it three to four times, or listing the things it says about yourself or examples to follow, commands to obey or promises to claim.
Structure your prayer by offering adoration, confession prayer, thanksgiving, and petition. Pray for your immediate needs and worries, and take time to sit in the presence of God.
The great thing about the prayer time routine is that it is customizable to meet your requirements. For some, you may have only a few minutes to spare and others could have an hours or longer. It’s important making it a consistent part of your daily routine. If you don’t make it through the occasional day or two, don’t sweat it! You can get back on track for the next day.
The practice of daily prayer is a wonderful opportunity to begin the new year with a renewed sense of purpose and connection with the divine. It’s a powerful method to begin your day by keeping your eyes to the Lord and aligning your thoughts and actions in accordance with His plan.
Another method to improve your prayer routine is to make it more interactive. Instead of just reciting words, try to engage with God at a deeper level. Make use of your imagination and try to picture the scenes described within the Bible. You can try to imagine the feelings of these characters and place yourself in their the shoes of their characters. This can make your time in prayer more meaningful and personal.
Try incorporating different forms in your prayer routine. For example, try a silent prayer, contemplative prayer, or even writing your prayers. This will prevent your prayer routine from becoming boring and will add variety to your spiritual routine.
One of the most effective methods to keep yourself focused and in line with your daily prayer routine is sharing your practice with others. Find a partner in accountability, a friend or family member who can check on you regularly and help you to adhere to your schedule. They could even join you in prayers and share their own experiences.
Remember, the goal of daily prayer is to strengthen your relationship with God and make sure that your thoughts and actions are aligned with His will. It’s not about perfectionism or adhering to an unwritten set of guidelines, but rather being deliberate and consistent in your daily spiritual practice. So, take the time to find a prayer routine that you enjoy and make it a priority in your daily life.
