Let’s be real, life can be hectic and it’s easy to let prayer get lost on the list of priorities. Like everything else that’s worth being a part of, it requires commitment and discipline. This is where establishing an effective prayer schedule comes in. It helps us establish a structure and accountability to ensure we’re connected to God on a regularly.
How do you start? It’s the first thing to do is decide which time of the day works best for you to pray. Some people like to start their day by praying, while others find it easier to pray in the evening before going to bed. Test and see what works best for you.
Once you’ve determined the best time for prayer then you can begin to establish a routine. Here’s an example of a daily pattern for prayer in the morning:
Begin by talking to God to ask for his help while you read and pray.
Read a passage from the Bible and reflect on the passage. It can be done by reading the passage three to four times, or writing down the things it says about yourself, or examples to follow, commands to obey , or promises to keep.
Structure your prayer by offering adoration, confession, petition, and thanksgiving. Make a prayer for your immediate needs and worries as well as taking time to be in God’s presence.
The beauty of praying is that it can be adapted to fit your needs. Many people might only have some minutes, while others may be able to devote a whole hour or more. The key is to make it a constant element of your day-to-day routine. If you don’t make it through one or two days, don’t sweat it! Get back on track the next day.
The practice of daily prayer is a wonderful way to start your new year off with a fresh belief in the purpose of your life and a connection with the divine. It’s a powerful way to begin your day by putting your focus on the Lord and aligning your thoughts and actions with His will.
Another way to increase your prayer time is to enhance it by making it more interactive. Instead of reciting the phrases, try engaging with God at a deeper level. Make use of your imagination and try to picture the scenes described in the Bible. Make an effort to experience the emotion of each character, and put yourself in their shoes. This can make your time in prayer more meaningful and personal.
Try incorporating different types prayers into your routine. For example, try silent prayer, contemplative prayer, or even writing your prayers. This can keep your prayer routine from becoming boring and will add the variety you need to your spiritual practice.
One of the best methods to keep yourself focused and in line with your daily prayer routine is sharing the practice with others. Find an accountability partner either a close friend or family member who will check in with you and encourage you to adhere to your daily routine. They can even be a part of your prayers and share their own experiences.
Remember, the goal of daily prayer is to deepen your relationship with God and align your thoughts and actions with His will. It’s not about perfection or following an unwritten set of rules, it’s about being consistent and deliberate in your spiritual life. So, take the time to discover a prayer practice that is a good fit for you and make it a priority in your day-to-day life.
