But with a little bit of planning and effort, you can create your own prayer routine that is suitable for you and your time. And the best part is, you get to customize it to fit your personality and spiritual tradition.
Let’s be real, life is hectic and it’s easy to let prayer get lost on the list of priorities. Like everything else that’s worth having, it takes effort and discipline. This is where the creation of a prayer routine comes in. It gives the structure and accountability needed to make sure we are connecting with the divine on a regular basis.
So, how do you begin? The first step is to determine the time of day that works best for you to pray. Some people prefer to start their day by praying, while others prefer to pray in the evening before going to going to bed. Try it out and discover what works for you.
Once you’ve determined the best time to pray, you can start to build your routine. Here’s an illustration of a typical daily routine for prayer in the morning:
Begin by approaching God, ask for his presence as you read and pray.
Read a passage from the Bible and meditate on it. This can be done by reading the passage three to four times, or listing everything it reveals about yourself or the examples you can follow, instructions to follow or promises to keep.
Structure your prayer by praying for adoration, confession prayer, thanksgiving, and petition. Make a prayer for your needs and pressing concerns, and take time to be in God’s presence.
The beauty of a prayer routine is that it’s customizable to fit your needs. Some people may only have a few minutes to spare while others might have a half an hours or longer. The key is to make it a regular part of your routine. If you don’t make it through the occasional day or two Don’t be concerned! You can get back on track the next day.
The practice of daily prayer is a wonderful method to begin your new year off with a fresh sense of purpose and connection with the divine. It’s a powerful way to begin your day by placing your attention to the Lord and making sure that your actions and thoughts are aligned in accordance with His plan.
Another way to increase your prayer routine is to enhance it by making it more engaging. Instead of reciting the phrases, try engaging with God on a deeper level. Try using your imagination to visualize the scenes by the Bible. Try to feel the emotions of the characters, and put yourself in their the shoes of their characters. This can make your time in prayer more personal and meaningful.
You can also try incorporating various forms in your prayer day-to-day routine. For example, try a silent prayer, contemplative prayer or even writing your prayers. This can keep your prayer routine from becoming repetitive and provide the variety you need to your spiritual practice.
One of the best ways to remain focused and in line with your daily prayer routine is sharing your practice with other people. Find an accountability partner, a family member or friend member who can check in with you and encourage you to adhere to your daily routine. They can even be a part of your prayers and share their own experiences.
The goal of a daily prayer practice is to increase your connection with God and align your thoughts and actions in accordance with His plans. It’s not about perfectionism or following a strict set of guidelines, but rather being consistent and deliberate in your life of faith. Take the time to discover a prayer practice that is a good fit for you and incorporate it within your everyday life. You’ll be amazed at how much difference it makes in your spiritual growth as well as overall wellbeing.
