How do you start? The first step is to determine the time of day that is most conducive to you to pray. Some people like to start their day with prayer while others prefer to pray before going to getting to bed. Test and see what works for you.
Once you’ve determined the best time for prayer then you can begin building your daily routine. Here’s an illustration of a typical daily routine for prayer in the morning:
Begin by approaching God, ask for his presence as you read and pray.
Read a passage from the Bible and then meditate on it. This can be accomplished by reading it three or four times or by listing everything it reveals about yourself, the examples you can follow, instructions to follow or promises to keep.
Structure your prayer by praying for adoration, confession, petition, and thanksgiving. Prayerfully address your needs and pressing concerns as well as taking time to be in God’s presence.
The beauty of the prayer time routine is that it’s customizable to meet your requirements. Many people might only have a few minutes to spare, while others may have a half an hour or more. The key is that you make this a regular part of your routine. If you don’t make it through one or two days, don’t sweat it! Just get back on track the following day.
The practice of daily prayer is an excellent opportunity to begin this new year feeling a new sense of purpose and feeling of connection to the divine. It’s a powerful way to begin your day by keeping your eyes to the Lord and aligning your thoughts and actions to His plans.
Another method to improve your prayer time is to enhance it by making it more engaging. Instead of simply reciting phrases, try engaging with God in a deeper way. Make use of your imagination and try to imagine the scenes that are described in the Bible. Try to feel the emotions of the characters and place yourself in their the shoes of their characters. This can make your time in prayer more meaningful and personal.
It is also possible to incorporate different types of prayer into your day-to-day routine. For example, try silent prayer, contemplative prayer, or even writing down your prayers. This can keep your prayer practice from becoming boring and will add the variety you need to your spiritual practice.
One of the best ways to stay motivated and on track with your daily prayers is sharing the practice with other people. Find a accountability partner either a close friend or family member who will be checking on you regularly and help you to adhere to your schedule. They may even join you in prayer and share their own experiences.
The goal of a daily prayer practice is to increase your connection with God and align your thoughts and actions to His plan. It’s not about perfectionism or following an unwritten set of guidelines, but rather being consistent and deliberate in your daily spiritual practice.
