The most challenging aspect of prayer is making it a constant part of our daily life. But with a little time and planning you can develop an effective prayer schedule that works for you and your schedule. The most appealing part is that you get to customize it to match your own personality and your spiritual beliefs.
Life can be hectic and it’s easy to let prayer get lost on the list of priorities. However, just like everything else worth being a part of, it requires effort and discipline. This is where establishing the habit of praying comes into. It helps us establish a an order and accountability to make sure we are connecting with the divine on a regular basis.
How do you get started? It’s the first thing to do is determine which time of the day is most conducive to you to pray. Some people prefer to start their day with prayer, while others prefer to pray in the evening before going to going to bed. Experiment and see what works best for you.
Once you’ve determined the best time for prayer then you can begin building your daily routine. Here’s an illustration of a typical daily routine for morning prayer:
Begin by talking to God to ask for his help while you read and pray.
Take a chapter from the Bible and then meditate on the passage. This can be done by reading it three or four times, or listing everything it reveals about yourself, or examples to follow, commands to follow or promises to claim.
Make your prayer a ritual by praying for adoration, confession as well as petition and thanksgiving. Prayerfully address your urgent needs and concerns, and take time to sit in the presence of God.
The great thing about a prayer routine is that it is customizable to meet your requirements. For some, you may have only a few minutes to spare, while others may be able to devote a whole time or even more. The key is that you make this a consistent part of your routine. And if you miss the occasional day or two Don’t be concerned! Just get back on track the following day.
A daily prayer practice is a great opportunity to begin your new year off with a new sense of purpose and spiritual connection with God. It’s a powerful method to start your day, putting your focus on the Lord and making sure that your actions and thoughts are aligned to His plans.
Another way to enhance your prayer practice is to make it more engaging. Instead of simply reciting phrases, try engaging with God on a deeper level. Use your imagination and try to imagine the scenes that are described in the Bible. You can try to imagine the feelings of these characters, and put yourself in their the shoes of their characters. This can make your time in prayer more meaningful and personal.
Try incorporating different types prayers into your daily routine. For instance, you can try silent prayers, contemplative prayers, or even journaling your prayers. This will keep your prayer practice from becoming monotonous and add the variety you need to your spiritual practice.
One of the most effective methods to keep yourself motivated and on track with your daily prayers is sharing it with others. Find a partner in accountability either a close friend or family member who will be checking in with you and help you to keep to your schedule. They may even join you in prayer and share their own experiences.
The goal of a daily prayer practice is to strengthen your relationship with God and ensure that your actions and thoughts are in line with His will. It’s not about perfectionism or following an unwritten set of guidelines, but rather being deliberate and consistent in your daily spiritual practice. Take the time to find a prayer routine that you enjoy and make it a priority in your daily life. You’ll be amazed at how much difference it makes on your spiritual growth and overall well-being.
