The most challenging part of praying is making it a consistent part of our daily lives. With a time and planning you can develop an effective prayer schedule that works for you and your time. The greatest part is that you can customize the ritual to suit your personal preferences and your spiritual beliefs.
Let’s be real, life is hectic and it’s easy to let prayer get lost on the list of priorities. But just like anything else that’s worth having, it takes dedication and discipline. This is where the creation of a prayer routine comes in. It gives the structure and accountability needed to make sure we are connecting with the divine on regularly.
So, how do you begin? The first step is to determine which time of the day is most conducive to you to pray. Some prefer to begin their day with prayer, while others prefer to pray at night before bed. Try it out and discover which method works best for you.
Once you’ve determined the best time for prayer, you can start to build your routine. Here’s an illustration of a typical daily routine for prayer in the morning:
Begin by approaching God to ask for his presence as you read and meditate.
Take a chapter from the Bible and then meditate on the passage. This can be accomplished by reading it three to four times or by listing everything it reveals about yourself, or guidelines to follow or promises to claim.
Your prayer should be structured by offering adoration, confession, petition, and thanksgiving. Make a prayer for your immediate needs and worries and then take time to enjoy God’s presence.
The best thing about the prayer time routine is that it can be adapted to meet your requirements. For some, you may have only just a few minutes and others could have a half an hour or more. The key is that you make this a constant part of your daily routine. If you fall off a day or two, don’t sweat it! Just get back on track the next day.
A daily prayer practice is a wonderful opportunity to begin this new year feeling a fresh belief in the purpose of your life and a feeling of connection to the divine. It’s a powerful way to start your day, putting your focus upon the Lord and aligning your thoughts and actions to His plans.
Another way to increase your prayer time is to enhance it by making it more engaging. Instead of just reciting words, you should try to connect with God in a deeper way. Use your imagination and try to picture the scenes described by the Bible. Try to feel the emotions of the characters, and put yourself in their position. This makes your time of prayer more personal and meaningful.
You can also try incorporating different forms prayers into your day-to-day routine. For instance, you can try silent prayers, contemplative prayers, or even writing your prayers. This will prevent your prayer practice from becoming boring and will add the variety you need to your spiritual practice.
One of the most effective ways to stay focused and in line with your prayer practice is by sharing it with others. Find a accountability partner, a friend or family member who will check in with you and encourage you to keep to your daily routine. They could even join you in prayer and share their personal experiences.
Remember, the goal of a daily prayer practice is to increase your connection with God and ensure that your actions and thoughts are in line to His plan. It’s not about perfection or following an unwritten set of rules, it’s about being consistent and deliberate in your life of faith. Take the time to discover a prayer practice that works for you and set it as a priority within your everyday life.
