The Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of
Surgery, Section of Vascular Surgery offers a two-year ACGME accredited
residency in Vascular Surgery. One applicant, who has completed a general
surgery residency, is accepted each year to the vascular surgery residency
program. The vascular resident will learn to recognize, diagnose, and
manage all varieties of vascular disease under the tutelage of the Section
of Vascular Surgery faculty, all of whom are ABS-certified
fellowship-trained vascular surgeons.
The Medical School has primary hospitals consisting of the
Clarian Hospital System (Methodist, IU, Riley Hospitals) as well as
Wishard Hospital and the Roudebush VA Hospital. These primary hospitals
provide for inpatient and outpatient experiences in the primary,
secondary, tertiary and quartenary care of the patient with vascular
disease. The vascular resident will complete training with expertise in
both open operative and percutaneous endovascular interventions. There is
hands-on training in all aspects of the non-invasive vascular laboratory.
The vascular resident is responsible for the organization of
the service both in terms of patient care and the general supervision and
guidance of the general surgical residents and medical students on the
service. There is the possibility of an added basic science research
experience based on the resident’s interest but it is expected that the
resident will conduct clinical research during the standard training
period.
